Western Foreign Mins Seek Closer Relations w/Delhi At G20 Summit

A number of Western foreign ministers and officials have issued comments this morning seeking to promote good relations with the Indian gov't as the G20 foreign ministers' summit in New Delhi gets underway. Earlier, EU High Rep for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that the "War of Russia against Ukraine has shaken the world economy and global security....India remains an indispensable and strategic partner for the EU...in these geopolitical settings, India and the EU can increase energy cooperation such as solar, wind, and green hydrogen."

  • Dutch FM Wopke Hoekstra: "[We] understand the security issues India has to deal with, these issues should be at the forefront of our minds in Europe...[we] will explore how to shift part of our production to India."
  • UK FM James Cleverly: "Putin must pay heed to [Indian PM Narendra] Modi's words that 'this is not an era for war'."
  • Ukraine's Western allies have sought to bring India into the fold in opposing Russia and offering support to Kyiv. However, India remains a major importer of Russian hydrocarbons and military equipment, making and significant shift away from Moscow an unlikely prospect.
