WH Official-US Supports Unofficial Relations w/Taiwan Not Independence

Wires and social media carrying comments from the White House's Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell, speaking on US-China relations.

  • Says that while the US supports its strong 'unofficial relations' with Taiwan, it does not support Taiwanese independence.
  • This sort of rhetoric is a major shift from that of the Trump administration, which memorably made the first US-Taiwanese presidential phone call in December 2016, before Trump had been inaugurated. The call sparked outrage in Beijing. The stance taken by Campbell and the White House could be seen as something of a peace offering from Washington, D.C. to the Chinese gov't amidst still-frosty relations.
  • Campbell also stated that without 'a constructive trade policy in the Indo-Pacific as a whole' - therefore including China - the US 'cannot be successful'.
  • Campbell: "China and the US might be able to coexist peacefully, but the struggle for this generation and the next will be great".
