White House Confirms Biden Meeting With Saudi Crown Prince MBS

US

US National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby has confirmed to an on-the-record virtual press briefing with the White House press pack that President Biden will meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS), the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, during his upcoming trip to the Kingdom.

  • It is understood that the only "formal" bilateral meeting of the trip will take place between Biden and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the de jure leader of the Kingdom, but Biden will meet MBS as part of that meeting.
  • Alex Ward at Politico: "Kirby: Biden will hold a bilateral meeting with Saudi king and and his leadership team, which will include Crown Prince MBS."
  • Kirby confirms that energy security will be on the agenda for the meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council.
  • Kirby says: “What happens [in the Middle East] definitely affects us here at home.”
  • Kirby says that Biden is "expected to raise human rights" and the Yemen war will be discussed.
  • The trip is scheduled to take place July 13-16.
