White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has issued a statement attacking a House Freedom Caucus proposal for raising the debt limit.
- WaPo reported earlier today that the HFC, "...would only supply their votes to raise the [debt] limit if they can secure about $130billion in spending cuts, cap federal agencies’ future budgets and unwind the Biden administration’s economic agenda."
- Jean-Pierre said: "This proposal would bring devastating consequences to our national security, working families, and community safety, and result in $0 in deficit reduction when coupled with MAGA Republicans' support for trillions in tax cuts."
- Yesterday, President Biden said he wouldn't sit down with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for debt limit talks until the GOP released their budget.
- McCarthy warned that a Republican budget may not come until late spring or summer, dangerously close to the so-called x-date when the Treasury Department exhausts extraordinary measures to stave off a default: "We were going to do the budget in April. But unfortunately, the president is so late with his budget, it delays our budget."
