White House National Security Advisor Sullivan Key Address Today

US

President Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will deliver a key address today at the Brookings Institution thinktank in Washington at 13:00 ET 18:00 BST:LINK

  • Sullivan's address may formalise a framework for economic cooperation and competition with China outlined by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen at John Hopkins University last week.
  • Yellen said the US has "three principle objectives" for approaching China: "Secur[ing] [US] national security interests... seek[ing] a healthy economic relationship with China, [and] seek[ing] cooperation on the urgent global challenges of our day."
  • Yellen acknowledged that the US-China "relationship is clearly at a tense moment" but stressed that US measures on China are "motivated solely by our concerns about our security and values," not "to gain competitive economic advantage."
  • According to Brookings, Sullivan “will outline the administration’s international economics agenda to date and the direction of this agenda going forward.”
  • “[Sullivan]will discuss how President Biden’s approach to industrial strategy is not just a domestic policy imperative but crucial to U.S. national security, and he will outline additional efforts that the administration is pursuing in its approach to international economic policymaking.”
