White House Press Conference With COVID-19 Response Team Underway Shortly

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is shortly due to deliver her regular press conference from the White House.

  • Jean-Pierre will be joined by White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha, and Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci.
  • The White House last week asked Congress to approve an additional USD$10 billion in COVID-19 funding. The request will likely be blocked by Republicans as was the previous request.
  • Shalanda Young of the White House Budget Office wrote: "While COVID-19 is no longer the disruptive force it was when the president took office, we face the emergence of new subvariants in the United States and around the world that have the potential to cause a surge of infections, hospitalizations, and deaths, particularly as we head into the winter months — a time when viruses like COVID-19 spread more quickly."
  • The presser comes as China experiences a spike in Covid-19 cases, prompting another raft of tight measures, and raising concern that Western countries are underprepared for a winter Covid-19 surge.
