White House: We Will Support Ukraine For As Long As It Takes

SECURITY

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has told reporters that the Biden administration is, "going to continue to help Ukraine for as long as it takes."

  • Jean-Pierre declines to reveal if President Biden has plans to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to discuss legislating the package of Ukraine funding which was stripped from the Continuing Resolution to prevent a government shutdown.
  • Jean-Pierre: "The Speaker was on TV yesterday saying, "I support being able to make sure Ukraine has the weapons they need"... so he has made public his support for Ukraine, there is a bipartisan support for Ukraine."
  • Jean-Pierre doesn't mention that McCarthy stressed that Ukraine aid could only come after an agreement for enhanced security at the US-Mexico border: "...they’re not going to get some big package if the border is not secure.”
  • Jean-Pierre says, "we have been in touch with some of our allies and partners about Ukraine... so that's going to continue... we're going to continue help to Ukraine as long as it takes."
  • Ukraine funding is further complicated by alooming threat from Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to trigger a motion to vacate the chair due to an alleged secret deal on Ukraine funding. Such an action could shut down Congress indefinitely.
  • Politico reports that the Senate is considering a huge, "single funding bill that can last through the 2024 election."
