Wholesale Sales See Partial Bounce In July Advance

CANADA DATA
  • Wholesale sales increased 1.4% M/M in the advance release for July, as they partially recovered from the heavy -2.8% M/M of June (all on an ex petroleum, products & other hydrocarbons, oilseed & grains basis).
  • It follows upticks in advance readings for July in retail sales (+0.4% M/M) and manufacturing sales (+0.7% M/M).
  • All these advances are in nominal terms, and whilst they are likely to look softer in volume terms when fed into next week’s real GDP advance, they do at least imply a bounce from the -0.2% M/M registered in the GDP June advance (further helped by hours worked increasing another 0.1% M/M in July).
  • Very little market reaction to the release though, with key event risk yet to come from Fed Chair Powell’s Jackson Hole appearance.
