Widespread Protests Against INE Reform, But Government Appear Untroubled

  • Protests across Mexico (estimates range from 1 million, to the government’s estimate of just 90,000) were extensive over the weekend, as AMLO’s electoral reform bill drew criticism from thousands of protestors as well as opposition politicians.* Opposition lawmakers continue to plan to raise the issue with the Supreme Court, who could dilute or even annul the legislation on the grounds that a two-thirds majority is required to secure constitutional change.
  • Trade balance data showed a narrower trade deficit than expected for January, at a deficit of $4.1bln vs. Exp. Deficit of $4.75bln. Both imports and exports slowed from the December reading.
