Winning Election, Immgr'tn Top Econ, Envrnm'nt In Con Leadership Race Issues

Polling from YouGov shows among Conservative party members issues such as winning the next general election (56% of respondents picked this issue) and controlling immigration (49%) are seen as the most important for the next party leader to get to grips with as the contest to succeed PM Boris Johnson continues. These issues were judged more important that dealing with rising inflation (40%), bolstering defence spending (26%), or keeping commitment to net zero emissions target by 2050 (4%).

  • Leadership contest so far dominated by talk of tax cuts and social issues. Should candidates heed this poll then there may prove little discussion of the environment or the NHS during the one-on-one leadership race (beginning Wednesday when the contest is whittled down to the final two candidates).
