World Oil Demand to Lose Momentum from Energy Transition: IEA

OIL

Growth in world oil demand is set to lose momentum over the 2022-28 forecast period as the energy transition gathers pace according to the IEA. Total oil consumption growth will remain narrowly positive through 2028 to 105.7mb/d, 5.9 mb/d above 2022 levels.

  • Petrochemicals are set to account for more than 40% of oil demand growth through 2028 according to the IEA. The petrochemicals increase will be led by Naphtha partly due to the expansion of production facilities in China.
  • Projected road traffic demand for 2028 would be 7.8mb/d higher without the savings from new EVs and efficiency improvements since 2022.
  • Jet fuel demand is set to increase but won’t recover beyond 2019 levels until 2027 due to substantial improvement in aircraft efficiencies.
