The Wall Street Journal has reported that Chinese Foreign Minster Wang Yi is expected to visit the US this week to lay the groundwork for Chinse President Xi Jinping's possible attendance of the APEC Summit in San Francisco in November.

  • Should Xi travel to the US, it would be his first trip to the US in over six years and his first meeting with President Biden since the G20 summit in Bali last November.
  • Daniel Russel, a vice president for international security and diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute and former State Department senior official told the Journal: “For the past several weeks I’ve seen the Chinese side gearing up,” adding that it is typical of Beijing to dispatch academics, former officials and other envoys to warm the atmosphere and tap U.S. sentiment ahead of summits.
