WV Sen. Manchin Signals 2024 Run

US

Democratic US Senator for West Virginia Joe Manchin has released a short statement signalling that he intends to run for re-election in his heavily Republican leaning state in 2024. Manchin's statement comes shortly after WV Governor Jim Justice filed papers to run for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat.

  • Since Joe Biden took the White House in 2020 at the same time as a 50-50 split Senate, Manchin has arguably been one of the most important politicians in the United States. Representing a state that Donald Trump won by 40 points in 2020, Manchin has been the Democrat senator that the White House and Democratic leadership in the Senate has had to win over on a number of occasions by watering down the more progressive aspects of legislation to secure the support of.
  • Statement reads "I am laser focused on doing the job West Virginians elected me to do - lowering healthcare costs, protecting Social Security and Medicare, shoring up American energy security and getting our fiscal house in order. But make no mistake, I will win any race I enter."
  • With 15 Democratic US Senate seats up in 2024 compared to just six Republicans the Democrats will have to work hard to retain their narrow majority, with West Virginia set to be one of the GOP's prime targets.
