Yellen Says She Still Hopes To Go To China

Wires reporting comments from US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen ahead of the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable scheduled for tomorrow.

  • According to Reuters, Yellen said "still hopes to go to China" and that, "China will be an active participant in first principles meeting of the sovereign debt roundtable."
  • A potential China trip may be dependent on preparatory work undertaken by officials from the US Department of Commerce in Beijing and Shanghai taking place this week.
  • A spokesperson for the Commerce Department confirmed the trip “to meet with U.S. Commercial Service officers, government counterparts and industry to discuss bilateral trade and commercial opportunities for U.S. businesses.”
  • White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in late March that the White House was discussing potential visits by Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to “talk about economic issues," adding that, "keeping those lines of communication open is still valuable.”
  • The sovereign debt roundtable will be co-chaired by the IMF, World Bank and India (G20 Presidency) and comprises official bilateral creditors, private creditors and borrowing countries.
