Zelensky Addresses "Chinese Peace Plan"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has addressed the "peace plan" unveiled by China today.

  • Zelensky said "It’s good that China is talking about Ukraine. But what will these words be followed with..?"
  • Zelensky dismissed the Chinese proposal as a peace plan but said: "There are some thoughts in China's declaration which are understandable to me... if this statement has some points which work for us, why not work with it."
  • Beijing's 12-point-plan states that territorial sovereignty should be respected and calls for restraint on nuclear rhetoric. The document, however, also calls on countries to abandon a "cold war mentality" refrain from dividing into military blocs, and opposes "unilateral sanctions-" all seen as implicit criticism of the West's role in the conflict.   • Since Biden and Putin gave duelling speeches this week, there have been signs of the conflict escalating - especially with Russia suspending participation in START - but there have also been tentative signs of diplomatic channels reopening for the first time since formal RU-UKR talks collapsed in April last year.
  • Reuters reports the Russian foreign ministry stating Russia is "open to achieving goals of military operation through political and diplomatic means."
