Zelenskyy In Finland For Nordic-Ukrainian Summit

UKRAINE

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a trip to the Finnish capital Helsinki to meet with President Sauli Niinisto and attend a meeting of the Nordic-Ukrainian summit, with the PM's of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland also in attendance. Zelenskyy and Niinisto are due to hold a presser at 1300 local time (0600ET, 1100BST, 1200CET) following a bilateral meeting (link to livestream here).

  • As with many of Zelenskyy's foreign visits, there had been no prior foreknowledge of the Ukrainian leader's trip. The office of the Finnish presidency states that summit is set to focus on, "...the situation of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the Nordic countries’ continued support for Ukraine, the developments in Ukraine’s relationship with EU and NATO and Ukraine’s initiative for a just peace." A joint presser will take place in the afternoon following the summit.
  • Zelenskyy is also set to meet with outgoing PM Sanna Marin, whose Social Democrats lost out in the April general election. Likely incoming PM Petteri Orpo has indicated that he will maintain Marin's hawkish stance on Russia and military support for Ukraine, and will also meet Zelenskyy.
  • Finland, now a fully-fledged NATO member, possesses one of the most advanced militaries in Europe thanks to its procurement of F/A-18s and F35 fighter jets, with Zelenskyy likely to seek a commitments from Helsinki on jet provision.
