PM Under Pressure; Poll Shows LAB Lead CON In All Policy Areas Covered

UK

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson remains under pressure regarding the 'partygate' scandal, with the House of Commons voting yesterday to start a third enquiry into the actions of Johnson and his gov't allegedly breaking lockdown restrictions in 2020.

  • A number of Conservative MPs have spoken out publicy about their belief Johnson needs to depart as PM, a move that would have a notable impact on policy continuity, even with another Conservative in charge at 10 Downing St.
  • Potential 'danger dates' for Johnson and his continued leadership centre around those days when reports into the 'partygate' scandal are published (unknown at present), as well as election days (5 May local elections, as-yet-unconfirmed Wakefield by-election).
  • The latest poll from Redfield and Wilton Strategies shows the opposition centre-left Labour Party leading Johnson's centre-right Conservatives in trust in all policy areas covered by the pollster (see chart below).
  • A general election does not have to take place until Dec 2024, and the Conservatives retain a 77-seat working majority in the Commons. Nevertheless, the Conservatives trailing Labour on issues such as managing the economy, managing foreign affairs, handling immigration, and tackling crime (all historically areas of Conservative polling strength) points towards a difficult challenge for the party in enacting policies that could win back support by the time of the next election.
