Bolsonaro Targets Supreme Court Ahead Of Elections

Analysts have warned of increased electoral risk in Brazil following the presidential pardoning of Congressman Daniel Silveira.

  • Silveira was sentenced by the Supreme Court for encouraging violence against judges and the Brazilian voting system and his pardon has reignited a confrontation between President Jair Bolsonaro and the Supreme Court which had receded slightly this year.
  • Reuters wrote: 'By attacking Brazil's most senior justices... Bolsonaro may also be preparing the ground to challenge the results of the presidential election, following the example of his political role model former US President Donald Trump.'
  • University of Sao Paulo law professor Rafael Mafei: 'Bolsonaro has made it clear that the truce is over and that he will turn confrontation with the court into an important rallying call of his re-election campaign.'
