1922 Chair Says Members 'Expected' To Be Involved, New PM By 28 Oct

UK

Chair of the 1922 Committee of backbench Conservative MPs Sir Graham Brady is speaking outside parliament on the upcoming party leadership contest.

  • Follows the resignation of PM Liz Truss as party head less than an hour ago.
  • 'It will be possible to conduct a ballot and conclude a leadership election by Friday 28th October'
  • Asked if party members will be included in proces: 'That is the expectation' [membership being involved seen as something of a wildcard, previously opted for Truss over the 'safety' candidate Sunak]
  • 'The party rules say there will be two candidates unless there is only one candidate'
  • Full details of contest to come this afternoon following meeting of 1922 executive.
Betting markets seeing the contest as a two-horse race. Smarkets gives Penny Mordaunt a 45.5% implied probability of becoming leader compared to 38.5% for former chancellor Rishi Sunak.
