UK: 2. The main surprise is the large swing to the Lib Dems, which has become a
bit of a spent force in UK politics. Stripping out the Greens and UKIP, seats
from the two main parties - Conservative and Labour - have gone largely to Lib
Dems and independents/smaller parties. Lib Dem MP Sir Ed Davey said this was a
'fantastic morning' and the 'Liberal Democrats are back in business'. Maybe a
bit of a stretch given the state of the parliamentary party, but the Lib Dems
did previously build themselves up to a party of power by have a strong
on-the-ground presence in election campaigns. Could this be the start of a
revival for the party?
- It is difficult to dissect the motivations of the electorate. Incumbents
typically take a beating in local elections during the course of the parliament
and UKIP has likely lost support from heading in a more extreme/intolerant
direction under its new leadership. At a very broad level, the results tell us
that voters are punishing the two main parties for their handling of Brexit, but
as is the case with the referendum and parliament's position, there is no clear
consensus on what the UK wants.
