After Delay War Cab To Meet On Iran Action; UK FM-Clear Israel Will Act

Israel's war cabinet is set to meet today (17 Apr) to decide on a response to the drone/missile attack by Iran. The cabinet had been due to meet on Tuesday 16 April, but this was postponed at late notice. It comes as Israel's allies advocate sanctions on Iran in an effort to draw Israel back from launching a major retaliation.

  • UK and German foreign minsiters and have held talks with President Isaac Herzog. After the talks, UK's Lord Cameron stated that It’s clear the Israelis are making a decision to act. We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible.
  • Cameron also called for a "clear, unequivocal message" from the G7 in the form of sanctions on Iran. Italian FM Antonio Tajani said on 15 April that Italy, in its position as G7 president in 2024, was open to sanctions. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said sanctions could focus "specifically on [Iran's] drone and missile programs."
  • Tzvi Joffre at the Jerusalem Post posts on X regarding the potential Israeli responses, select comments below:
    • "1. Direct strike on Iran: Israel could carry out airstrikes or missile strikes on Iranian nuclear or missile facilities, but that means almost definitely casting the entire region into war [...]
    • 2. Covert sabotage op in Iran: [...]. This option is a sort of middle ground: It still leads to an attack on Iranian soil while also providing plausible deniability.
    • 3. Intensified strikes outside Iran: This option is the least likely to serve as a response. It would take a really significant strike on Iranian interests outside Iran to try and bring an equal response [...]"
