Air Force Chief Officially Removed From Post In Wake Of Wagner Mutiny

RUSSIA

State media has confirmed that erstwhile head of Russia's Aerospace Forces General Sergei Surovikin (nicknamed 'General Armageddon') has been officially removed from his post, with RIA reporting that Colonel-General Viktor Afzalov, head of the Main Staff of the Air Force, is temporarily acting as commander-in-chief of the Air Force. Surovikin was last seen in the aftermath of the failed Wagner PMC mutiny against President Vladimir Putin delivering a video address without insignia calling for an end to Wagner's actions.

  • Reuters: "[Surovikin] was placed in charge of Russian military operations in Ukraine last October, but in January that role was handed to General Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the general staff, and Surovikin was made a deputy to Gerasimov."
  • In the run up to the mutiny, Surovikin was one of the few senior military figures who did not feature in Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's numerous video tirades from the front lines in Ukraine. The apparent closeness of relations between Prigozhin and Surovikin led to investigations that the latter may have been complicit in the mutiny, and he is now believed to be under house arrest.
  • Meanwhile, the deal reached between Putin and Prigozhin appears to have afforded the latter significant leniency. In his first video since the mutiny Prigozhin appears to be in Africa (Reuters stated that it could not verify the location or date of the video), in what could prove concerning for ECOWAS states and western nations following the military coup in Niger.
