Aksener's IYI Rejoins Opposition Alliance After Mayors Meeting

TURKEY

Following a meeting with the mayors of Ankara and Istanbul, the conservative Good Party (IYI) of Meral Aksener has rejoined the 'Table of Six' opposition alliance as the group meets to give the final sign-off on a joint candidate for the presidential election taking place in a few months time.

  • Earlier today it was reported (see 1115GMT bullet) that Aksener had met with Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The two mayors, hailing from the centre-left Republican People's Party (CHP) sought to bring Aksener's party back into the opposition alliance, while the IYI sought to promote a plan to have the two mayors stand as vice-presidential candidates.
  • Local media has confirmed that the talks seemed to have had the intended effect, with Aksener attending the meeting of the Table of Six today in order to finalise the expected announcement of CHP head Kemal Kilicdaroglu as the joint presidential candidate.
  • IYI's participation in, and support of, the Nation Alliance candidate is a crucial component if the opposition are to have any hope of ousting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the presidential election. Party-level polling for the parliamentary election gives IYI around 10% support.
  • Political betting markets continue to see Erdogan as the strong favourite. Data from Smarkets give the incumbent a 68.0% implied probability of winning, compared to 28.2% for Kilicdaroglu.
