Alaska Gov Calls Special Election

Governor Mike Dunleavy (R-AL) has issued a 'proclamation declaring a vacancy in the Office of the United States Representative and calling for a special election' to fill the solitary Alaska House seat which has been left vacant by the passing of long-time Rep Don Young, who held the seat from 1973 until his death last week.

  • The special primary shall be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022.
  • The special election shall be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2022.
  • The above timeline has some significance following today's announcement from Democrat Rep Filemon Vela Jr. (D-TX) that he will depart Congress early. It is unlikely that Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) will be as hasty in calling a special election leaving House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a vote light in the House until at least September.
