ANC Electoral Committee Confirms Step-Aide Rules, Strike Action Looms

  • ANC electoral committee chair Kgalema Motlanthe sank the hopes of the suspended ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule for a political comeback in December, Daily Maverick report, after Motlanthe confirmed that those who had been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of a court case or disciplinary hearing would be prohibited from participating in any contestation as part of the new step-aside rules. Magashule was suspended from his position as secretary-general in May 2021 after being charged with corruption, fraud and money laundering.
  • IoL report that members of the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (Nupsaw) are set to march onto the streets of Pretoria on Tuesday over grievances including widespread corruption and poor governance where workers will demand a number of social reforms. The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) have also scheduled a national shutdown protest on Wednesday.
  • Bloomberg report that South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana plans to continue exercising his duties, despite police informing him that a criminal complaint of sexual assault has been made against him. Godongwana repeatedly denied the claims against him in a statement on Thursday.
  • The data docket is light today with no major economic releases set to be released.
