  • South African retail sales saw weak +0.1% m/m growth in September, following the -1.3% m/m contraction in August. This was more robust than expectations.
  • Sales were down -0.6% compared to September 2021. Substantial declines were recorded in food (-8.1%), hardware (-8.0%) and pharma (-4.9%).
  • Apparel and general dealers continued to see robust growth, boosting Q3 retail sales to remain positive at +0.2% q/q.
  • Q3 consumer sentiment remained extremely depressed in the FNB/BER survey. Only a marginal improvement is anticipated for Q4.
  • Market focus remains on the CPI release due next week (Wed) ahead of the SARB's meeting on Thursday.
