APEC Summit Day Two: Finance Ministerial Sessions

Day two of the APEC Summit in San Francisco gets underway today with a series of finance ministerial meetings hosted by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. The subtext of the day will be the ongoing thaw between the United States and China, leading up to Wednesday's bilateral meeting between President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

  • Treasury said in a statement, accompanying today's agenda, “One of the United States’ key bilateral relationships in APEC is with China, and continuing to responsibly manage our economic relationship with China will remain a priority during APEC meetings and engagements."
  • The statement outlines the Biden Administration's vision for a pragmatic economic relationship with China: "We do not seek to de-couple from China. Instead, we seek to de-risk and diversify, by investing at home and strengthening linkages with allies and partners, including APEC members. At the same time, we will work to advance our national security through targeted actions where needed..."
