Appeals Court Orders Release Of President Boluarte’s Brother

PERU
  • Local media report that an appeals court ordered the release of President Dina Boluarte’s brother and her lawyer from preliminary detention while they are investigated for alleged influence peddling and criminal organisation. The court ruled on Friday that Nicanor Boluarte’s alleged involvement in a criminal group did not make him a flight risk. Meanwhile, President Boluarte herself remains under investigation for shutting down a special police team looking into her brother’s activities hours before his arrest.
  • The news follows the rejection by Congress last week of another three impeachment motions against President Boluarte. The motions had been supported by a minority of left-wing lawmakers, but did not obtain the necessary 40% of votes in Congress for admission.
  • On the data front, the domestic calendar is light in the early part of this week, ahead of Q1 GDP data, due on Thursday. Monthly data suggest that the economy grew by 0.5% q/q (sa) and 1.4% y/y in Q1.
