Assange Extradition To US Blocked, Could See Rocky Patch In UK-US Relations

A UK judge has blocked the requested extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States on charges of espionage.

  • The judge stated that if extradited the measures in place in the US facilities due to hold him would not be sufficient to stop him self-harming. The US gov't has stated that it will appeal the decision.
  • The decision comes at a bad time for the UK gov't. Having left the Brexit transition period at the end of 2020, PM Johnson is keen to reach a trade deal with the US as soon as possible. However, incidents such as this are unlikely to improve the tenor of relations between the Johnson gov't and the incoming Biden administration, with the latter already wary of the former's close relationship to outgoing President Donald Trump.
