Atlantic Basin Crude Exports Hit by Slower China Demand

OIL

January 2024 saw a big drop in Atlantic Basin crude exports to East of Suez markets according to Vortexa.

  • January saw a decline of 1.7mbd vs December 2023.
  • Most of the crude out of the basin remains unaffected by the Red Sea diversions, as it usually heads around the Cape of Good Hope (with the exception of Russian).
  • Instead, Vortexa figures indicate the slowdown has been driven by China weakness.
  • China crude/condensate imports have been declining since November 2023, while new quotas in 2024 have failed to spur buying.
