August International Trade Deficit +5.9% to -USD67.1B

  • The U.S. international trade gap widened in August, growing 5.9% to -USD67.1 billion from -USD63.4 billion in July. Markets had expected the deficit to widen to -USD66.2 billion.
  • That increase mainly reflects an increase in the August goods deficit, which rose USD3 billion to -USD83.9 billion, and a decline in the services surplus to USD16.8 billion.
  • Exports were up 2.2% in August, climbing to USD171. 9 billion. Imports rose 3.2% to USD239 billion.
  • The trade gap with China fell to -USD29.8 billion in August from -USD31.6 billion in July.
  • The trade gap with Canada narrowed to -USD933,000. The trade gap with the EU also narrowed to -USD19.9 billion.
