Giving an interview to CNN, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen - in response to a question about the AUKUS alliance that saw a Franco-Australian submarine deal jettisoned in favour of a deal between Australia, the US and the UK - says that "One of our member states has been treated in a way that is not acceptable. We want to know what happened and why, and clarify that before we keep on going with business as usual."
- On Friday night the French gov't recalled its ambassadors from Washington, D.C. and Canberra (pointedly leaving the ambassador to the UK in place, implying the UK plays a minor role in the AUKUS alliance) in a show of Paris' anger with the deal.
- There is little sign of an improvement in tone in recent days, and there will be significant focus in Washington, D.C. as to the reaction from EU institutions and the other major EU member states to the development.
