AUSTRALIA

The Australian and NZ PMs have just met in Australia and discussed the economy, security and the climate.

  • In regards to relations with China, PM Albanese said “It is in Australia's national interest to have good economic relations and to trade with China, and it is in China's interest to receive the goods that we have, but that AUKUS was moving ahead and that Australia would stand up for its national interests.
  • New NZ PM Hipkins commented that “China is an important part of New Zealand, and as trading partner, and a part in other areas as well so that doesn't mean they will not be areas where we disagree from time to time, we continue to voice our disagreements with China”.
