Bailey asked on consumer spending

BOE

BOE asked about consumer spending and data over past few days:

Bailey said this is an uneven picture. Very rapid recovery of the housing market, "delayables" spending has been strong. Social spending has been weak. Have already seen structural change. July was 1.4% higher than July last year but share of online sales increased. How much will we see persistent structural changes and how much will that break the path of consumption?

When asked about regional impacts, Bailey said it is a concern. The geographical location of credit card spending shows London is the weakest region. How much of this is a structural change.

Asked on implications on employment of move to online sales. Bailey again says this will depend on how much is a longer term structural change.

In those answers, Bailey has refused to be drawn on how much of the changes are temporary and how much are permanent structural changes.
