BanRep Co-Director Says No Need For Emergency FX Intervention Now

COLOMBIA
  • Central bank co-director Mauricio Villamizar said that foreign exchange intervention to ease COP volatility is a tool the central bank has, however, there is no “emergency” at this present moment that would merit its use.
  • Speaking in a webcast panel organized by Valora Analitik, Villamizar did add that this can change at any time and that the Colombian peso has been hit by the risk coming from the high twin deficits. He said that Colombia FX markets have enough liquidity, but there’s been a lot of volatility.
    • The comments come following recent comments from the finance minister that FX intervention would be discussed at the December 16 BanRep meeting.
  • Today, central bank Governor Leonardo Villar participates in an event on payment systems organized by the bank.
  • Also, minimum wage negotiations will continue between the government, employers and unions.
