Barnier To Propose Fish Quota Deal Worth EUR117mn As Part Of FTA: RTE

EU-UK

Tony Connelly at RTE tweets: "BREAKING: the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier will propose that between 15pc and 18pc of the fish quota caught in UK waters by EU fleets will be restored to the UK under a free trade agreement, @rtenews understands. EU vessels catch on average €650 million in quota each year from UK waters, meaning Barnier's offer would be worth up to €117m. These would be in demersal and pelagic stocks."

  • These are the first potential concrete details of a proposed deal on fisheries, but there are some notable issues.
  • Firstly, EUR117mn is a small amount of money in the grand scheme of EU-UK trade relations. Will the UK accept this as an acceptable offering?
  • The UK has made a significant amount of noise about the protection of its waters. Will getting back the money for 15-18% of the EU catch in its waters placate the more nationalist Brexiteers that appear totally opposed to any EU fishing of UK waters?
