BBC-Tehran Criticises US' 'Hasty' Assessment Of Response To EU JCPoA Plan

IRAN

Kian Sharifi at BBC Monitoring on the ongoing lack of clarity over the Iran nuclear deal:

  • "Iran "considered the facilitating and speeding up the conclusion of the negotiations" when preparing its response to the US, FM Amir-Abdollahian told Oman's top diplomat Badr al-Busaidi on the phone today.Iran says its response is constructive but US & EU officials disagree. The US says Iran's response "is not constructive" while an EU diplomat has described it as "not reasonable", per Politico."
  • "Iran's state-run Al Alam TV criticised the US for its "hasty" assessment. Supreme National Security Council-linked Nour News accused Washington of "trying to shirk responsibility". According to multiple journalists in Iran, Tehran noted its response that it's "prepared for a ministerial meeting" in Vienna as early as next week to finalise a deal - if the US meets Iran's "handful of suggestions raised" in its latest proposal."
While politicians have spoken of their 'hopes' for a deal to be reached in the coming days or weeks, the major lack of clarity over US and Iranian responses to the EU's final draft for a nuclear deal (that brings the US back in and Iran back into compliance) makes predicting whether an agreement will come to pass almost impossible.
  • If no deal in the next couple of weeks, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting and the UN General Assembly meeting could prove lively forums for discussion of the nuclear deal.
