BCB Now Formally Autonomous With Dual Mandate

  • Despite a lengthy process, Brazil's lower house finally approved legislation that grants the central bank formal autonomy. The bill also adds the goal of full employment to its policy mandate.
  • The bill set fixed, overlapping four-year terms (renewable once) for the members of the BCB board.
  • The government retained the power to appoint the members, and the Senate still holds the final word to approve them, but under the new rules, board members can only be dismissed under very specific circumstances. (BBG)
