BelTA Reports Ukrainian Missile Has Landed In Belarus

SECURITY

Belarus state-run BelTA news agency has reported that a Ukrainian S-300 missile had fallen in the territory of Belarus during a heavy Russian missile barrage against Ukraine.

  • According to BelTA, the missile landed in agricultural land between 07:00-08:00 GMT 02:00-03:00 ET with no reports of casualties.
  • Reuters reports that the Belarus defence ministry is investigating "whether Belarus' air defence systems had shot down the rocket or it was a misfire."
  • The incident is similar to an incident last month when a reported stray Ukraine missile landed in Polish territory. That incident was downplayed by the Poland and NATO as a accident despite early calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggesting that the missile may have been fired from Russia.
  • Recent troop and military hardware movements from Russia into Belarus have led to concerns that Moscow may apply pressure on Minsk to take a more active role in the war.
  • Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has denied those suggestions and claimed that recent close contact with Russia is regarding economic and regional concerns.
