Biden Says Navaly's Death Should Compel Support For Ukraine

US

President Joe Biden, delivering an ad hoc address at the White House, has urged Congress to pass aid to Ukraine, saying the death of Russian opposition figure Aleksey Navalny, "reminds us of the stakes of this moment."

  • Biden: "Make no mistake. Putin is responsible for Navalny's death. Putin is responsible. What happened to Navalny is yet more proof of Putin's brutality."
  • Biden: "History is watching the House of Representatives. The failure to support Ukraine in this critical moment will never be forgotten. Its gonna go down in the page of history... this has to happen now." Biden later strongly criticsed the House for taking a two-week recess without considering the Senate-passed supplemental bill.
  • Referencing Trump's recent NATO comment, Biden says: "All of us should reject the dangerous statement made by our previous president which invited Russia to invade our NATO allies if they don't pay up."
  • Biden: "Let me be clear: This is an outrageous thing for a president to say... as long as I'm president America stands by our sacred commitment to our NATO allies."
  • On potential consequences for Navalny's death, Biden says the admin is, "contemplating what else can be done against Russia," and is, "looking at a whole number of options."
  • On this week's news that Russia is developing an anti-satellite capability: "There is no nuclear threat to the people of America from what Russia is doing," adding there is, "no evidence Russia has made a decision to do anything in space," and the capability is largely theoretical.
