Bolsonaro Remains Silent, Truckers Block Highways

BRAZIL
  • President Bolsonaro maintained an increasingly loud silence on Monday following his election defeat, failing to publicly acknowledge his loss to veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
  • The silence is raising concerns among both supporters and critics over how he might respond to the outcome of a ballot that he has spent much of the past few months asserting would be rigged.
  • The markets appear to be taking the silence in their stride with the Brazilian Real closing over 4% higher compared to Monday’s low shortly after the open.
  • The financial times have reported that truckers blocked highways at more than 300 points across Brazil to protest at Lula’s victory, as concerns linger over Bolsonaro’s failure to recognise his defeat.
  • In a tweet on Monday afternoon, Flavio Bolsonaro thanked his father’s supporters and said they wouldn’t give up on Brazil, without specifically referring to the outcome.
  • Columnist Lauro Jardim wrote in O Globo newspaper that the president will not contest the election’s result but will criticize the electoral process, citing an unidentified government minister.
