Borrell Confirms Belarus Sanctions In Days, Criticises Russia Influence

European High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell speaking earlier today confirmed that the EU will slap further sanctions on Belarus over the migrant crisis on the Polish border facilitated by the Lukashenko regime.

  • After Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Borrell says that "We are looking at all possible solutions to stop the Lukashenko regime from targeting us, and targeting its own." Legal basis for sanctions was approved today, but list of sanctions not finalised yet.
  • Borrell says that for migrants 'The road to the EU does not lead through Belarus." Adds that the EU is "providing information in order to avoid people being instrumentalised and weaponised with a political objective. This is illegal, and inhuman...This crisis has been artificially created,,It's clear that Lukashenko is doing what he's doing because he has the strong support of Russia, even if Russia says they have nothing to do with it."
  • Says that Russian troop buildup on Ukrainian border is worrying and that the EU's "support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine is unwavering".
