Budget Comm. Seeks To Raise Pressure On Next Gen EU Holdouts

EU COMMISSION

EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn tweets: "With the ratification of #Estonia and #Ireland this week, we are at 21 Member States which ratified the #OwnResourcesDecision. Congrats and thanks to Croatia, Cyprus, Slovenia, Portugal, France, Bulgaria, Malta, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Luxembourg, Latvia, Czechia, Denmark, Sweden, Slovakia, Lithuania, Germany, Estonia, Ireland (in order of ratification). I call upon the remaining Member States to speed up the process so that we can start in time with the implementation of #NGEU which will provide the much needed money for #Europe's #recovery!"

  • With the 21 countries listed above having ratified the Next Generation EU 'Own Resources' decision, this leaves the Netherlands, Austria, Romania, Hungary, Poland, and Finland as the nations yet to approve the agreement.
  • The Own Resources decision is the means that would allow the EU Commission to raise its own funds on capital markets.
  • The remaining holdouts are largely either part of the 'frugal four' (Netherlands, Austria), or have an increasingly poor relationship with the institutions of the European Union (Poland, Hungary).
  • The process in Finland is being held up by the requirement for a supermajority in parliament to approve the Own Resources decision, placing major pressure on PM Sanna Marin's coalition gov't.
