Calls for Parliament to Reconvene Amid Multiple Crises

SOUTH AFRICA
  • In an effort to bring output back to more optimal levels, Eskom is re-hiring former employees to help re-acquire the skills needed to maintain plants. The utility is also now looking to bring in the original equipment manufacturers for maintenance purposes where they don’t have engineers with sufficient experience, according to News24.
  • EWN reports that the opposition Democratic Alliance has called for parliament to be reconvened early so that lawmakers can start tackling the myriad issues facing the country. Assembly is currently out for the next eight weeks, but the prospect of load shedding, petrol price spikes and government scandals should supersede constituency requirements.
  • Trucker protests surrounding Johannesburg continue after beginning yesterday, with the key route from Mozambique – the N4 highway – obstructed by parked trucks. The toll route advises that the road is closed for all traffic.
