Canada LNG Facility Export Expansion Plan Abandoned

Following a feasibility study Repsol has abandoned the expansion of an LNG terminal on Canada’s east coast according to a spokesperson for Saint John LNG yesterday.

  • It is deemed it too expensive to add new liquefaction facilities to the existing import terminal and to upgrade the pipeline network and the cost of shipping gas is too high.
  • The potential project was thought to be a quick way to add export capacity to transport gas from fields in western Canada across to Europe.
  • Last year Canada discussed with Germany ways to add supplies to Europe to help replace missing Russian flows. The Cedar LNG export terminal on the west coast recently received an approval and there are numerous other eastern terminal proposals.
