Catalan Former MEP Shot Amid Heightened Tensions Following Amnesty Deal

SPAIN

Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a Catalan former MEP from the conservative Popular Party (PP) who was an early convert to the right-wing nationalist Vox party, has been shot in the face in Madrid. According to reports, Vidal-Quadras is “stable and conscious,” in hospital. The identity of the shooter and their motivation is unknown, but just hours ago the staunch opponent of Catalan independence posted on X "The infamous pact between Sánchez and Puigdemont that crushes the rule of law in Spain and ends the separation of powers has already been agreed. Our Nation will thus cease to be a liberal democracy and become a totalitarian tyranny. We Spaniards will not allow it."

  • A deal agreedbetween acting PM Pedro Sanchez's centre-left PSOE and the pro-Catalan independence Junts is set to keep Sanchez in power. However, the amnesty for those involved in the illegal 2017 independence referendum has roused anger on Spain's anti-independence right, with the PSOE's HQ in Madrid the site ofviolent protests two nights running.
  • The announcement of the deal, combined with today's violent incident, could see social tensions rise further in the short term.
