CDU Polling Slump Continues As Greens Narrow Gap

GERMANY

Latest opinion polling ahead of Germany's federal election in September shows a continuation of the slide in support for the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who now only lead the environmentalist Greens by 2% according to a 4 August Kantar poll.

  • Kantar/FOCUS Union: 24% (-3), GREENS: 22% (+3), SPD: 18% (+1), FDP: 13%, AfD: 11%, LEFT: 6%, Other: 6% (-1) Changes to the last survey of 30 July 2021

  • The 24% support for the CDU is the party's lowest since 9 June, and comes as chancellor candidate Armin Laschet comes under fire for his response to the devastating floods that hit Germany in July.
  • Overall polling shows a continued decline in the combined support for the CDU and Greens (seen as one of the most likely post-election coalitions). Should the two parties combined fail to win over half the seats, it would require the formation of a potentially unwieldy 3-party coalition at the federal level.
