Centrica Submit Application to Reopen Rough Storage

NATURAL GAS

Centrica has submitted an application to the North Sea regulator to reopen Rough gas storage.

  • Rough was the UK largest gas storage facility and closed in 2017 due to cost of repairs required to keep it running.
  • At the time it was reported that the wells and facilities had suffered testing failures as they were at the end of their design life.
  • The Rough facility is a depleted natural gas field and could store approximately 9 days’ worth of UK gas demand.
  • Discussions are in the early stages with Centrica claiming it will only be viable with government support.
