Chicago Fed National Activity Index Softer Than Expected

  • The Chicago Fed national activity index came in softer than expected in June, at -0.32 (cons -0.16) for little change from a downward revised -0.28 (initial -0.15) but back to its lowest since March.
  • “33 indicators improved from May to June, while 51 indicators deteriorated and one was unchanged. Of the indicators that improved, 13 made negative contributions.”

Contributions to CFNIA:

  • production-related indicators –0.27, down from –0.20 in May.
  • sales, orders, and inventories –0.05, edging down from –0.01 in May.
  • employment-related indicators +0.03, up from –0.06 in May.
  • personal consumption and housing category –0.02 from –0.01 in May.
