China’s crude oil imports in March rose to the highest level since June 2020 as refiners stepped up runs to capture fuel export demand and in anticipation of a domestic economic recovery, data from the General Administration of Customs showed.

  • Crude imports in March rose to 52.3mn tons, or 12.37mbpd, up by 16% from February levels.
  • Refined product exports rose to 5.5mn tons in March, compared with 4.1mn tons in March 2022.
  • Total crude imports for the first quarter stood at 136.6mn tons, up by 6.7% from the same period last year.
  • "Refined fuel exports will increase, as currently the margins on exported gasoline are quite positive," said Xu Peng, a refined products analyst at China-based commodities consultancy JLC.
  • Crude imports from Russia rose to a record of 1.46mbpd, with Chinese buyers taking their biggest volumes of Urals ever at 586kbpd, Kpler data showed.
